A midsize SUV is big enough to haul plenty of people and cargo, yet nimble enough to drive comfortably. Two great SUVs from General Motors are the 2018 GMC Acadia and its bigger brother, the all-new 2018 Chevy Traverse. Both of these SUVs seat seven or eight in neat packaging that emphasizes roominess, fuel efficiency and ease of use. The biggest difference between the two is size, which might be the basis of your selection.

Engines

The 2018 Traverse offers two engines: A 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 putting out 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft, channeled through a 9-speed automatic transmission. The fuel economy on the smaller engine is not yet available. The V6 delivers 18 city/27 highway mpg in forward-wheel drive, 17/25 mpg in all-wheel drive. The 2018 Acadia also comes with a choice of two engines: A 2.5-liter I4 with 194 horsepower, 190 lb-ft and 21/26 mpg (FWD) or 21/25 mpg (AWD), and a 3.6-liter V6 delivering 310 horsepower, 271 lb-ft, and mpg of 18/25 (FWD) or 17/25 (AWD).

Dimensions

The 2018 Chevy Traverse is longer, wider, higher, has a longer wheelbase and greater towing capacity. Traverse has a larger cabin with more headroom, shoulder room and rear leg room. The 2018 Acadia ties the Traverse for front legroom. Traverse provides up to 98.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the second and third row folded, versus 79 cubic feet for the Acadia.

Trims

The 2018 Traverse comes in five trim levels. The base L model is FWD only, and comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six USB ports, a 7-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, keyless ignition and three-zone automatic climate control. As you move to higher trim levels (LS, LT, Premier and High Country) you gain access to AWD, nicer wheels, leather interior, advanced safety features and hands-free tailgate. The base Acadia SL shares most of the features in the base Traverse, plus a system to remind you take your valuables. The higher trim levels (SLE, SLT and Denali) add the creature comforts you’d expect, plus a two-panel panoramic sunroof and a driver alert system.
