What is the Fuel Pump Relay?

What is the fuel pump relay, and why is it important for your Schertz travels? Your fuel pump relay controls the current flow throughout your Chevy truck electrical system. That means it controls everything from the ignition system to the lights, as well as safety features like anti-lock brakes. If the fuel pump relay senses something is wrong, it can slow or stop the flow of electricity completely.

How to Bypass the Fuel Pump Relay

Once you’ve gotten all your tools in order, it’s time to learn how to jump the fuel pump relay. The process should take just under an hour, so follow these steps to get going:

  1. Find the Relay: After parking your car on flat ground, pop your hood and look in the bay of the engine. You’ll likely find the fuel pump relay by the fuse box or the battery terminals, but check your owner’s manual to be sure.
  2. Disconnect the Terminals: Carefully disconnect the battery terminals. You’ll need to remove the black negative cable, but you can remove both if you’d prefer.
  3. Connect Jumper Cables: Join the ends of the cable carefully, matching the disconnecting process you did in step 2. Join the red positive cable from the jumper cable to the corresponding battery terminal while avoiding contact with any other metal.
  4. Start Engine: Start the engine and let it run for 15 seconds. Turn off the ignition switch.
  5. Check Your Lights: The final step is to look at the light on your fuel gauge and see if it turns green. It may change from red to yellow to green, so give it a little bit of time.

What if you want to learn how to bypass the fuel pump relay without jumper cables? You’ll need to disconnect the 4-pin pump from the center of the relay. Then, take a 5-inch piece of copper wire strip a half inch worth of insulation from both ends of the wire. One end of the stripped wire will connect with the pin slot on the upper-left of the pump relay center, while the other end will go into the pin slot on the lower-right of the relay center.
